CBO: Millions Could Lose Employer-Provided Health Coverage Due to Obamacare

**Written by Doug Powers

The “we have to pass it to find out what’s in it” express keeps chugging along:

As many as 20 million Americans could lose their employer-provided coverage because of President Obama’s healthcare reform law, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said in a new report Thursday.

The figure represents the worst-case scenario, CBO says, and the law could just as well increase the number of people with employer-based coverage by 3 million in 2019.

The best estimate, subject to a “tremendous amount of uncertainty,” is that about 3 million to 5 million fewer people will obtain coverage through their employer each year from 2019 through 2022.

Remember this?

Earlier in the week the CBO found that the “Affordable Care Act” is going to make health care so affordable that it will cost at least twice as much as originally advertised:

The Congressional Budget Office has extended its cost estimates for President Obama’s health care law out to 2022, taking in more years of full implementation, and showing that the bill is substantially more expensive — twice as much as the original $900 billion price tag.

In a largely overlooked segment of the CBO’s update to the budget outlook released Tuesday, the independent arm of Congress found that the bill will cost $1.76 trillion between now and 2022.

That only counts the cost of coverage, not implementation costs and other changes.

  1. Breaking news that we already knew 3 years ago.

  2. Anyone with a brain figured that out years ago. We tried to tell them. But the media made sure no one heard the truth. Thank GOD it is starting to trickle out!!

  3. This “affordable” health bill is going to crash and burn, just as Obama is. It will be sooooo sweeeet!!!

  4. I’m just surprised it won’t cost more or have millions more without health care! It is all going along as planned by bho, team, d’s, and yes some rino’s that voted for bhocare to see what was in the bill!

  5. in other news, banana attacks gorilla!

  6. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fraud, war, gas prices, blah, blah, blah. But what are we doing with our brackets? Let’s keep our priorities straight.

  7. That’s the goal.
They want the Goobermint to provide healthcare for everyone.

The fight with religious employers over the contraception mandate is to either force them to comply, or force them to sell the hospitals, schools, charities, etc. Either way, the Goobermint wins.

  8. “Collapse the system.”

  9. I really, really, really hate to have to put so much hope and prayer into a SCOTUS case, but the “Affordable Care Act” case (and getting the Usurper-in-Chief out of office) will in large part decide our country’s destiny. It may be “game over” anyway, but if the “Affordable Care Act” is not destroyed, it will for sure be “game over.”

    Closer, I think.

  11. I’m surprised that the CBO didn’t hold their report until after the election.

  12. That’s the goal.

Yes, along with Goobermint to be the ultimate provider and manager. Seek to destroy private enterprise and make us all answerable to and dependent upon the government.

This was one of those rare times when GOP opposition was unanimous. They had to woo back some Dems that wanted to vote against it for it to pass– by a slim margin. It drives me crazy whenever the LSM doesn’t say “Passed over Bi-Partisan Opposition”.

PPACA passed the Senate on December 24, 2009, by a vote of 60–39 with all Democrats and two Independents voting for, and all Republicans voting against.[8] It passed the House of Representatives on March 21, 2010, by a vote of 219–212, with 34 Democrats and all 178 Republicans voting against the bill.[9]

  14. I’m surprised that the CBO didn’t hold their report until after the election.

It works to Obeyme’s and the dems favor, so they believe. Think about it: Headline: “Greedy employers refuse to provide for their employees the basic right of health care, all with the GOP’s blessing.”

  16. It passed the House of Representatives on March 21, 2010, by a vote of 219–212

    Ahh…March 21, 2010. The day I realized we no longer HAVE a representative government…

  17. I project that future CBO projections will be worse, but it’s an uneducated guess.

  18. “They want the Goobermint to providecontrol healthcare for everyone.”

Perhaps that is closer. But this is the goal:

The government wants to control everyone.

I’d love to do the GOP ad for Nov regarding health care. What an easy ad it would be.

One side is Obama saying what he said about his socialized medicine, on the other side in contrast is the truth.

Closing summary statement could be any number of conclusions like…

Someone this wrong does not deserve 4 more years….

    etc.

  19. Ahh…March 21, 2010. The day I realized we no longer HAVE a representative government…

Yup. Government now only exists to represent itself. We are merely here to financially enable it.

Michelle and Doug should have regular ‘Election Ad Idea’ threads. We have some imaginative and talented people posting here.

  21. Looks like they are having problems suppressing the lies and distortions of socialized medicine until after the election.

    Remember In November !!!

  22. So what’s it going to take to repeal it completely? Executive Order from the new Pres sometime the afternoon of 1/20/13? Or a whole drawn out legislative affair with the shrieking media claiming the new Pres wants to kill babies (okay, bad example – they like killing babies – how about wanting grandma to die..oh wait, the death panels are good with that too…hmm, why do they want socialist healthcare again??? Oh yeah, the graft to be had and the control over people’s lives!!!)

  23. Hey, the more folks gettin’ freebees from the government, the more of those folks who will vote democrat. Beck, and many others, warned us about that more than two years ago. So, Congrats, America! Any further elections may already be out of our hands.

I’d like repeal to be the last line of legislation that replaces it. The Bill should be no longer than 30 pages, be about rescinding all Federal government intrusion into the healthcare industry including mandates, allowing insurance sales across state lines, and capping tort awards.

  25. Remember this?

“If you like your doctor, and your healthcare plan, you’ll be able to keep it.”

“And Reese Witherspoon will start returning J S Ragman’s phonecalls” he went on to say.

Not sure what site that was that showed all House GOP members voting against Obamacare, but it is incorrect. There was 1 House GOP member who voted for Obamacare and they lost their seat in 2010. That would be Joseph Cao.

They figured it was better to get the report out now so the voters will forget about it by Novemeber.

  28. And that senile witch Pelousy is probably still babbling to herself, “Why did they vote us out of power?” She and the rest of the Dems cut their own throats to pass this bill against the country’s wishes, and ever since, they’ve been reaping the “rewards”. Let’s “reward” them again in November, people of MM.com!

  29. Re Phil’s comment on the Obama’s NCAA bracket choices. I was pretty disgusted to tune in to SportsCenter only to find Obeyme talking about college hoops. Not that there aren’t more important issues to deal with right? I remember vividly how the media sought out GW for his insights on who would be in the World Series. They so admired him for being former owner of the TX Rangers–at least they’re consistent! (is sarc tag even necessary?)

I wholeheartedly agree. And given his involvement in the creation of Massachusetts’ health care plan, I cannot fathom why Mitt Romney remains the Republican frontrunner. As long as he remains proud of that accomplishment, I cannot in good conscience vote for him. [and before fellow Malkinites rail against me for allowing a second Obama term, please note that I live in California (the red part), and that my vote is in no way going to influence the electoral college outcome for this state, being as blue as it is].

If the GOP maintains control of the House and gains control of the Senate, it would seem that they should be able to prepare budgets that will “starve the beast” by denying funding to those agencies responsible for administering the ACA, in the event that it is not ruled unconstitutional. And why don’t the red states start enacting an amendment to the Constitution overturning that legislation?? It just seems that there is so much more that we can be doing….

  31. F.U.B.A.R. Remember da one’s legacy in Nov 2012.

  32. The House needs to choke off the cash flow to this disaster now. No waiting until January. It is doable.

  33. *Let’s just hope and pray that Anthony Kennedy keeps his head screwed on straight to rule this puppy unconstitutional, as it is!
*The numbers are far higher than the CBO is reporting; Just look at Medicare and every other Uncle Sugar program; Obamacare is a neutron bomb hidden inside a case of dynamite; It won’t be pretty when the fit hits the shan!
*Businesses are highly competitive for employees, but once a certain number toss their ee’s overboard due to bottom line issues, that number will go much higher, just what the progressives wanted all along, a path to single payer and the end of our great Republic; Let’s reverse course in November, our last chance!

  34. You probably already know the IRS tax code penalizes married couples. But did you know that ObamaCare will add another tax penalty, taking even more money out of married Americans’ pockets? There are two reasons for this:

The ObamaCare tax credit is linked to the federal poverty level (FPL) and the FPL does not increase proportionately as household size increases. For example, in 2014, 400 percent of the FPL will be about $45,600 for a one-person household, increasing roughly $16,000 for each additional member ($61,600 for a two-person household). So, by linking the tax credit to the FPL, two individuals who make between $61,600 and $91,200 (twice the level of the one-person household) will not benefit from the tax credit since they will be over 400 percent of the FPL for a two-person household; BUT if they don’t get married or if they get a divorce and live together, they’ll each get the tax credit.

The Administration has proposed a rule that if one spouse is offered health insurance at work, even if it is self-only coverage, then no one in the family is eligible for the tax credit. For example, a 40-year old, married couple has two children. The husband earns $40,000 and the wife earns $30,000. The husband’s employer offers self-only coverage but the wife’s employer doesn’t offer health insurance. Because the husband has access to employer-offered insurance, the family would not receive any tax credits. However, if the couple lives together and is unmarried, the mom and the two children would qualify for a tax credit of $10,895 to use to purchase a health care policy.

Yet another unintended effect of ObamaCare to look forward to!?

I just read an article that the Tea Party Patriots are planning a massive rally in DC on March 24 just before the SCOTUS hearing starts. The article said they have 20 buses filled with people signed up to go.

Yeah it may not matter according to the donks, but thousands unleashed on DC can only remind many that people do not like this crap.

  39. We already lost coverage at my job due to the legislation. I knew it was coming of course. This is how they will build the Single Payer that the statists want. They will force as many people into dependency as possible, all so they can have another racket. They have to be able to control our lives to make it work of course. Isn’t top down, centrally planned living a hoot?

Don’t forget that they are trying to force military retirees out of TRICARE and into the exchanges by raising the cost. So far the Vet groups have staved it off, but if this election goes badly I doubt that Obama and Company will even bother with lipservice anymore.

Instead, we get multiple media accounts of how the 16 Afghans killed were the result of a lone, deranged gunman….NOTHING on whether Oweblamer may be culpable.

No media reaction like with Abu Ghraib where the left was POSITIVE the orders to act like a frat house came right from Bush and Cheney. No hand- wringing articles about how the stress of Bushes war pushed them to act. No questions to Duh Won! over how his poor policies caused the killing.

To top it off, his top defense officials crap all over the honor and integrity of those putting their lives on the line insinuating they cannot be trusted with their weapons when said officials grace them with their presence …and further denigrate them by saying they want them to be like the Afghan soldiers present.

Instead we get breathless news on Urkels basketball picks.

  54. What I’d like to know is if it took the GOP winning the election in 2010 for the CBO to finally, in 2012, turnaround and say, “Opps!, we messed up”? I mean, we KNEW they were lying, but did it take having a Republican House to generate enough honesty that they’ll now admit they were full of it before? Imagine the world we’d live in if the Senate were no longer under Harry Reid’s thumb.

From my understanding of how the CBO works is that they can only score what they are given and only in the way it is written(even if they know that it is BS). So if the party in power gives the CBO a bill that says humans can fly to the moon on unicorn fart power they have to score it as if unicorn fart power was a viable fuel source.
